Review: White Cat

White Cat
Holly Black
The Curse Workers #1

Cassel comes from a family of Curse Workers - people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they're all criminals. Many become mobsters and con artists. But not Cassel. He hasn't got magic, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail - he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.

Cassel has carefully built up a facade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his facade starts to crumble when he finds himself sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He's noticing other disturbing things too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he must unravel his past and his memories. To find out the truth, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen.

Rating: 4/5

What I Liked:
The idea for the book was very original. In their society there are people called 'workers' who are said to be able to kill you with one touch or the hand. That would be true, but everyone wears gloves to be safe and if you aren't wearing gloves you are avoided like the plague. Anyways, the idea is actually quite interesting and the author does a really good job of explaining the way things work.
~ The Male POV. I actually really like when book are in the guys point of view. They just seem a lot less emotional. And Cassel actually seems pretty cool... *cough* and kind of attractive *cough*

What I Didn't Like:
~ The ending! Like, the last chapters were fine, but something happened at the very end that just made me mad. The story could have just ended and I would have been very happy, but the author just had to throw in one last thing that just messed it up for me.

Cover:
~I could not count the number of people who said the authors name with the title and thought the whole thing was the title. In my opinion the title should be the largest thing on the page.

In All:
~ This was a really interesting book that kept you on the edge of your seat.

Have you read this book? If so, what did you think?
